The best TH4 base is a compact, trap-ready design that keeps the Town Hall, Clan Castle, and mortar difficult to reach in one push. Place the air defense just behind the core rather than on the outer edge, then use layered walls and staggered defenses to make the first breach expensive.
TH9 needs a different answer. The larger building count supports specialized layouts, so we should choose among farming, war, and trophy structures instead of stretching a small TH4 pattern into a crowded base.
Best TH4 Base: Use a Compact, Trap-Ready Core
Core plan: centralize the Town Hall, Clan Castle, mortar, and best defenses
Build a small central compartment around the Town Hall, Clan Castle, and mortar. The Clan Castle should be difficult to lure from outside, while the mortar should sit where it covers both the core and the likely outer approach. Put the air defense inside the next layer, close enough to be protected by walls but offset so one entry does not give an attacker every important target.
Keep the most valuable resource storages in the inner ring when possible. Place cannons and archer towers around that ring so their ranges overlap across each side. Collectors, builder huts, and other low-value buildings can form the outside layer, creating a funnel and buying time without giving attackers a direct route to the core.
Placement priorities: offset the air defense, layer walls, and trap likely entries
- Walls: Use the strongest wall segments around the core, then create a second partial ring around storages and key defenses. Avoid one large open box that lets troops walk around the entire base.
- Traps: Put spring traps between defenses where ground troops are likely to walk, small bombs just inside common wall-breaker entries, and the air bomb on the approach most likely to expose the air defense.
- Defense coverage: Make each side cover at least one neighboring side. This prevents an attacker from removing one defense and then attacking an uncovered corner.
- Entry control: Leave low-value buildings outside the core, but do not create a straight line of buildings that leads directly from the edge to the Town Hall.
How a Level 4 Town Hall Base Changes at TH9
TH4: compact buildings, short paths, and reliable air-defense coverage
A level 4 Town Hall base has limited walls and defenses, so compactness matters more than elaborate compartment shapes. We want short firing distances, overlapping coverage, and traps placed at the few entries an attacker can realistically use. A simple core usually performs better than a decorative maze with isolated defenses.
TH9: more compartments, longer routes, and multiple attack lanes
TH9 has enough defenses for separate compartments and several attack directions. We can spread mortars, Wizard Towers, air defenses, and X-Bows so one spell or breach does not remove the base’s entire defensive value. The trade-off is complexity: every extra compartment must still have a purpose and must not create an easy funnel toward the Town Hall.
TH9 Bases for Farming, War, and Trophies
Farming ring: protect storages while sacrificing outer collectors
For farming, place the Clan Castle and several storages in a protected central or inner ring, with other storages separated into nearby compartments. Keep collectors outside the main defense so they absorb the first wave and encourage attackers to spend troops before reaching resources. This layout protects loot better, but it gives up some perimeter buildings and may lose trophies more often.
War compartments: split splash and air defense while defending likely entries
A war layout should use two or three meaningful compartments rather than one square box. Keep the Clan Castle central, separate the air defenses across different sections, and avoid placing both Wizard Towers where one jump, breach, or spell can reach them. Put X-Bows and high-damage defenses where they cover the core without creating excessive value for one attack lane. This improves resistance to a planned attack, but an unused side can become weak if its defenses do not cover the likely entry.
Trophy shell: protect the Town Hall and trade some perimeter safety
For trophies, place the Town Hall deep inside a layered shell with the Clan Castle and strongest defenses nearby. Use outside buildings to make a funnel, but keep enough defensive coverage on every side to stop an easy percentage push. Storages can sit inside the shell as extra hit points. This protects the Town Hall more reliably, although collectors and outer buildings will be easier to lose.
Replay Checks and Safe TH4/TH9 Adaptations
Trace the cheapest breach-to-core route, not just the first building lost
After a defense, replay the attack and trace the route from the attacker’s entry to the core. Mark the first wall opened, count how many important defenses became reachable from that breach, and check whether outside buildings created a clean funnel. A lost collector is usually acceptable; a single entry that exposes the mortar, Clan Castle, air defense, or Town Hall is the real problem.
Move one building or trap, then retest the same attack pattern
Change one variable at a time. Move a trap to the tested entry, shift one defense to close overlapping coverage, or swap a low-value building that is creating a funnel. Then test the same troop direction again. If the attacker now needs a second breach or loses access to multiple defenses, keep the change; if the route remains equally cheap, adjust the next exposed point rather than rebuilding the entire base.
